Munich

Last week we went on a four night trip to Munich and Salzburg. We took the kids out of school on Friday and Monday and left Thursday after work. It took us about 4.5 hours to get to Munich (by car) so we arrived there kind of late and went straight to bed.

We stayed in a hotel called Arthotel Munich which was nothing fancy, but adequate. The hotel was decorated with a lot of murals and various types of modern art which was interesting. It was in a good location to walk to the city center which we did after having breakfast at the hotel.

Did you know gummy bears are originally from Germany? A candy maker from Bonn, Germany started the Haribo company in 1920 and later developed the gummy bear.

The first thing we did after breakfast in Munich was to walk through the Viktualienmkt. It was amazing...a foodie's dream.

Another Pinterest idea...
A stand full of all kinds of mushrooms...
and cheese...
and grapes...
Ceiling of St. Peter's Church

and any kind of fresh produce, cheese, wine, bread you can imagine.

He was underneath that ceiling.

And of course, a biergarten.  They serve beer literally everywhere here. The legal age to drink beer and wine is 16 and hard liquor is 18.

This is a typical German meal and I have to say it was delish. They put some sort of curry sauce on top of the brat and then add a pretzel and a beer. Done.

Munich's oldest brewery. Amazing beer. We like the Hells (light) and Dunkel is dark.

Photo to the right is of Brad eating what is says above...Leberkas. He didn't really like it as you can see by his face.
Token creepy dolls photo from the Toy Museum.

This is a view of the Marienplatz from the bell tower of St. Peter's Church. Marienplatz is the central square of the city center. The building is the new City Hall.

And this is the "old" city hall (Rathaus) where they have the toy museum now.

Then we got a bike rickshaw tour through Munich. Our driver was great and very knowledgeable.

Surfers in the river in the English Garden. The river is man made and the surfers made a slight adjustment to an already existing "wave" in the river.

The nude section at the English Garden.

Hard to see but this is one of the few Nazi swastikas that were left by the US Army after WWII.  They simply did not see it. Over 90 percent of Munich was bombed in WWII. There are only a few towns in Germany that are "original" and not rebuilt after WWII. Heidelberg is one of those areas.

At a GIANT outdoor store in Munich. Love the pretzel around his neck.

Slacklining seems to be pretty popular here. MK was pretty good at it. We saw some people doing it in the park as well. I tried it and it's not easy.

Kids at the Deutsches Museum, the world's largest museum of technology and science. It was amazing, but unfortunately we waited until too late in the day so only had 90 minutes which wasn't near enough time.
